An information point of the Council of Europe for Belarusians will be officially opened on May 12 at 19:00 at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset and head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will speak at the ceremony.
Ahead of the opening, the Secretary General will also meet with representatives of Belarusian civil society, the Council of Europe press service reports.
The information point aims to raise awareness among Belarusians, including civil society and media, about the core values and legal instruments of the Council of Europe, as well as to support activities within the organisation’s contact group on cooperation with representatives of Belarusian democratic forces.
The opening will take place as part of the official visit of Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset to Lithuania on May 11–12. During the visit, he will meet with President Gitanas Nausėda, the Speaker of the Seimas, the ministers of foreign affairs and justice, as well as representatives of Lithuanian NGOs. The talks will focus on issues of democratic security, support for Belarusian civil society, the situation in Ukraine and preparations for the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers meeting in Chisinau on May 15.
