Chinese diplomats are in contact with their US and Russian counterparts regarding a possible meeting between the leaders of the United States, Russia and China on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said this at a briefing.

“China is maintaining contact with the relevant parties regarding a potential meeting between the Chinese, Russian and US leaders,” she said.

Yesterday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said preparations were under way for a meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. It could take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China.

Media outlets had previously reported that the initiative for such a meeting came from Russia. Donald Trump said he was open to taking part and suggested that the meeting could focus on nuclear issues. Following those reports, the Kremlin did not confirm that such an initiative had been put forward, although it said that APEC could serve as a venue for a trilateral meeting.
