Belstat to Start Calculating GDP Under New UN System

Belstat will begin calculating gross domestic product this year under the updated 2025 System of National Accounts approved by the United Nations Statistical Commission. This was announced by Chair of the State Statistics Committee Inna Medvedeva.

“This will make it possible to assess intangible assets such as databases and the digital economy. We are working with the High-Tech Park and the National Bank and are planning an experimental GDP calculation by 2028,” she said, as quoted by BelTA.

The Belstat chair also spoke about key results in sectoral methodology, including, for the first time, an assessment of the contribution of the creative economy to the country’s GDP. According to data for 2022–2023, this indicator amounted to about 5 percent. Medvedeva stressed that the result demonstrates the development of the services sector and is a clear sign of a transition to an economy based on knowledge, innovation, and intangible values.
