Belarus to Send Germany Copy of Verdict Against Deceased Siegling

Belarus will send Germany a copy of the Supreme Court verdict against Hans Eugen Siegling, who died in the second half of the 20th century. The decision was made by Supreme Court Chairman Andrei Shved, court spokesperson Yuliya Lyaskova said.

In March, Siegling was found guilty of genocide against the Belarusian people. During World War II, he headed police units of Nazi Germany and also served in the SS. He carried out punitive operations in the territories of the Minsk, Hrodna, and Brest regions.

“The Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus asked his German colleagues to carefully consider, from a legal standpoint, the materials of the criminal case against Hans Siegling being sent to them. The competent authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany must provide a legal assessment of the acts committed by Hans Siegling during the Great Patriotic War on the territory of the BSSR, based on the materials we are sending,” Lyaskova said.

According to her, there is no statute of limitations for genocide in Germany.

“Thus, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus, proceeding from the principles of the inevitability of punishment and the rule of law, and with the aim of restoring historical truth and justice, raises before the German side the issue of the need to return to proceedings in the case against Hans Siegling and review earlier decisions concerning the crimes he committed,” she explained.
