Belarus Proposes Adding Draniki To UNESCO Cultural Heritage List

Belarusian authorities have proposed adding Belarusian draniki and babka to the UNESCO cultural heritage list.

The Presidium of the Council of Ministers has identified the historical and cultural value “Dishes Made from Grated Potatoes — Traditions of Preparation and Consumption in Belarus,” which may be included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Ministry of Culture will submit the proposal to UNESCO by the end of March.

“This will help expand information about Belarus as a country where national cultural traditions are preserved, as well as increase the country’s tourist attractiveness and promote the development of gastronomic tourism,” the press service of the Belarusian government noted.

Traditions of preparing dishes from grated potatoes (draniki, potato pancakes and babka) are present in all six regions of the country and since 2022 have been included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus. More than 370 bearers of these traditions from 73 districts and 235 folk recipes for grated potato dishes have been documented.

Currently, there are seven Belarusian elements on UNESCO’s lists of intangible cultural heritage.
