Babruisk Resident Sentenced to Four Years of “Chemistry” for Abuse of Stepdaughter

The Babruisk court found a 37-year-old laborer guilty of abusing a minor and threatening to kill her. He was sentenced to restriction of liberty with placement in an open-type correctional facility for a term of four years, as well as a fine of 100 base units (4,500 Belarusian rubles).

According to the prosecutor’s office, the man cohabited with the mother of two children and took part in their maintenance and upbringing. Between April and October last year, he beat his 12-year-old stepdaughter on three occasions.

“The reasons for the use of violence were poor school performance and disorder in the apartment. On one of the days, the stepfather wrapped his arms around the child’s neck and squeezed it, restricting her ability to breathe, which was perceived by the minor as a real threat to her life and health,” the prosecutor’s office said.

It is noted that the girl’s mother witnessed one of these conflict situations but limited herself to a conversation with her partner. The man’s treatment of the child became known to a representative of an educational institution, after which a criminal case was opened.

The court also ordered compulsory treatment for the man for chronic alcoholism.

The verdict has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed or protested in appellate proceedings.
