Mikalai Charhinets, one of Aliaksandr Lukashenka‘s most loyal and controversial supporters, died today at the age of 88.
For his support, Charhinets received virtually every honour the authorities could bestow.
He was a lieutenant general of the internal service, a politician, an honorary citizen of Minsk and a People’s Writer of Belarus. He was awarded numerous orders and medals and received several international literary prizes. He was “elected” three times to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus. He chaired the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic on International Affairs and National Security, as well as the Commission on Foreign Policy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia. He also represented Belarus at the United Nations for nearly 10 years.
