Singer Aliaksei Khliastou has been released after serving an administrative arrest term. A video featuring him was published on Instagram by his wife, Yelena.
Khliastou’s detention became known on May 22. He was sentenced to 14 days of administrative arrest on a charge of “petty hooliganism.” Prior to that, the singer had reportedly been summoned several times for “preventive conversations” with law enforcement representatives. According to him, he was first called to the traffic police under the pretext of a traffic violation, then invited for a conversation with officers of GUBOPiK on Revoliutsionnaya Street, and later summoned to the city police department.
Aliaksei Khliastou had a successful music career in Belarus and was named Belarus’ “Best Singer of the Year” on several occasions. In recent years, he had been unable to perform and was working as a taxi driver.
