Pavel Sieviaryniec Elected Chairman of Belarusian Christian Democracy

Pavel Sieviaryniec has been elected chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party (BCD). The party’s unification congress was held today in Białystok.

The congress was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the historic BCD party. The organisers said the congress aimed to unite different strands of Belarusian Christian democracy, restore and develop the party’s activities, and strengthen cooperation among Belarus’s democratic forces.

Pavel Sieviaryniec was among the 123 political prisoners released on December 13. He was detained in June 2020 and sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of organising mass riots. Along with most of those released, he was taken to Ukraine. Sieviaryniec later moved to Lithuania.
