26-Year-Old Political Prisoner Ashurak Suffers Minor Stroke in Colony

Political prisoner Kiryl Ashurak has been sentenced to an additional year in prison under an article on disobedience to colony administration. Pressure is reportedly being exerted on him in Mahiliou Penal Colony No. 15, and at the end of 2025 Ashurak suffered a minor stroke, the Viasna human rights center reported.

Kiryl Ashurak is 26 years old. In 2022, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison in the “Belarusian Civil Self-Defense Units case.” Ashurak was accused of attempting to sabotage a communications hub in Vileyka.

According to human rights defenders, pressure has been exerted on Ashurak in the colony. He was periodically placed in a punishment cell and later transferred to a cell-type facility. Ashurak has not seen his relatives for three years.

The political prisoner was given an additional year in prison under Article 411 of the Criminal Code on persistent disobedience to colony administration. Under the new sentence, he will serve his term in strict-regime Penal Colony No. 9 in Horki.

Human rights defenders report that Ashurak suffers from serious illnesses. At the end of 2025, he experienced a minor stroke.
