Woman Suspected of Killing Newborn Son in Zhlobin Detained 23 Years Later

In February 2003, a bag containing the body of a newborn baby was found in a rubbish container in Zhlobin. The woman suspected of killing the child has only now been detained.

On February 28, 2003, a passer-by noticed a bag containing the body of a newborn boy in a rubbish container in the courtyard of a five-storey apartment building in Zhlobin. She reported the discovery to the police. Investigators established that the child had been born full-term and alive, and that he died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Police investigated patients of specialised medical institutions and socially vulnerable women in Zhlobin but were unable to identify the mother.

Forensic experts established the DNA profile of the newborn and of an unidentified woman believed to be his mother. The genetic data were entered into the automated DNA information system, the State Committee of Forensic Examinations reported.

In April 2026, experts established that the infant’s DNA profile matched the genetic characteristics of a 25-year-old man from the Rahachou District. Further forensic examination confirmed that the man’s mother was biologically related to the murdered infant.

The woman, who lives in the Rahachou District, has been named as a suspect in the murder of a knowingly underage child. Authorities said she is cooperating with investigators and has admitted her guilt.

According to the woman, the pregnancy was unwanted. She did not register for prenatal care and gave birth at home in a village without medical assistance. She then killed the baby and transported the body to Zhlobin.
