The decision was made on the recommendation of the Coordination Council in accordance with the established procedure, the Cabinet’s press service reported.
Tsikhanouskaya noted that Stankevich’s experience working with former political prisoners and her understanding of the needs of people who have experienced repression were important for the position.
“Social policy is first and foremost about people, about supporting those who find themselves in difficult circumstances and need help”, Tsikhanouskaya said.
She expressed confidence that Stankevich’s experience would help strengthen the Cabinet’s work in this area.
The previous day, the Coordination Council held hearings with three candidates for the position. Following a ranked vote, the Council recommended appointing Stankevich. Her candidacy was put forward by the “Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement” faction.
Stankevich coordinates the Volnyja initiative, which helps former political prisoners adapt to life after release and obtain social, legal and other necessary support.
Previously, Yuliya Mitskevich had served as the Cabinet’s representative for social policy. She took up the position after Volha Zazulinskaya was appointed head of the Mission of Belarusian Democratic Forces in Kyiv.
