Ukrainian Woman Sentenced In Belarus Exchanged For Two Russian Citizens

Ukraine exchanged two residents of Russia’s Kursk Region for a Ukrainian citizen who had been serving a prison sentence in Belarus. The exchange took place on the instruction of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Kursk Region Governor Alexander Khinshtein said.

“The Ukrainian side appealed to Belarus to exchange a Ukrainian woman who had been serving a sentence for a criminal offence. On the instruction of the President of the Republic, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, she was exchanged for two residents of the Sudzha District — a grandmother and granddaughter aged 85 and 42,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

The two Russian women were taken to a hospital. Doctors examined them and determined that hospitalization was not required. The women will be transported to Kursk.

Khinshtein thanked Lukashenka and Ivan Krupko, chairman of the Homyel Regional Executive Committee, for coordinating the process.

On March 5 and 6 Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner exchange in the format of 500 for 500. The Ukrainian side reported that among those who returned today were two civilians. The exchange took place at the Nova Huta checkpoint on the Belarus–Ukraine border.

On March 5 Lukashenka signed a decree pardoning 18 people. Fifteen of them had been convicted under “extremism” articles. Eleven of those released were women.
