Ukrainian Detained in Poland for Allegedly Glorifying the UPA on Orders From Russian Intelligence

Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) has announced the detention of 18-year-old Ukrainian citizen Illia K. He is accused of working for Russian intelligence services.

According to ABW, the young man carried out activities aimed at inciting ethnic tensions between Poland and Ukraine.

“The evidence gathered indicates that 47 criminal offences may have been committed between November 2024 and August 2025, including the desecration of memorial sites, among them those dedicated to Polish victims of the UPA. In addition, the defendant has been charged with preparing acts of sabotage using an unmanned aerial vehicle,” the agency said.

“Acting on instructions from Russian intelligence, the young Ukrainian placed inscriptions glorifying the UPA and Bandera on buildings and memorials. In doing so, he desecrated sites of importance to Poles, including the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw and the memorial to the victims of the Volhynia massacre,” added Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for Poland’s Minister-Coordinator of the Special Services.

ABW also disclosed details of the alleged recruitment process through online messaging platforms and the use of cryptocurrency, transferred via exchanges registered in Russia and China, to pay for the alleged criminal activities.
