An attempt to import more than 6,300 tablets containing codeine was stopped at the Brest checkpoint, the State Customs Committee reported.
According to customs officials, a 52-year-old Ukrainian citizen was traveling from Poland in an Opel car. He chose the red channel as he was declaring the temporary import of his vehicle.
Customs officers became suspicious of three containers with dietary supplements for athletes found among his personal belongings.
“The driver explained that he was transporting the goods at the request of third parties. According to an expert conclusion by the State Forensic Examination Committee in the Brest Region, the seized tablets contained a particularly dangerous narcotic substance — codeine,” the statement said.
As a result of joint measures with Russian customs authorities, the intended recipients of the supplements were identified.
“They turned out to be Russian citizens living in Simferopol. The suspects have been detained,” the committee added.
A criminal case has been initiated.
