The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has confirmed that it carried out a strike on the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal in Russia. According to the agency, the attack was conducted jointly with the Special Operations Forces, the Unmanned Systems Forces, and the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry as part of the 40-day campaign to exert pressure on Russia, the objectives of which had previously been outlined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the SBU, multiple Ukrainian drone strikes caused at least three separate fires on the terminal’s premises.
The St. Petersburg Oil Terminal is one of the largest oil and petroleum product transshipment facilities in northwestern Russia. It covers 37 hectares, has 21 petroleum storage tanks, and an annual handling capacity of 12.5 million tonnes.
“Systematic strikes on oil infrastructure deprive Russia of the resources it uses to finance its aggression, complicate fuel supply logistics, and increase the economic cost of the war for the Kremlin. The longer Russia chooses the path of escalation, the more significant the consequences will be for its strategic infrastructure. The SBU will continue to strike legitimate military and economic targets until Russia ends the war.”, the SBU said.
The attack was also confirmed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Last night, our Ukrainian long-range sanctions against Russia over this war produced results in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia’s war effort, and also targeted Kronstadt, an important military objective. The distance from Ukraine’s state border is more than 850 kilometers,” he wrote on Telegram.
