Police in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region are investigating two car explosions that occurred on October 31 in forested areas near the country’s northern border. Five people were killed and three others were injured in the incidents.
In the first case, a group of local residents was driving a UAZ vehicle along the border to carry out scheduled logging work. After straying from the approved route and passing warning signs, the vehicle hit an explosive device. The blast killed five men aged between 19 and 65. Two others, aged 25 and 40, were taken to hospital.
Later the same day, another explosion was reported. Preliminary data indicate that two residents of the Korosten district, aged 55 and 32, were transporting timber in a ZIL truck when it hit a mine. The younger man sustained injuries and was hospitalized, the Zhytomyr regional police press service said.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incidents and urging citizens to follow safety rules and avoid approaching border areas marked with warning signs reading “Stop! Mines!”
