Polish border guards detained three people over the weekend who had arrived in the border zone to collect a shipment of contraband cigarettes dropped from Belarusian territory using drones.
As reported by the Polish Border Guard, those detained included two Belarusian citizens and one Polish citizen. Four packages of cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were seized, with a total value of around 95,000 zlotys (about $26,000).
All three detainees have been placed in custody for three months by court order. In addition, border guards will file a request to revoke the permanent residence permits of the two Belarusian citizens in Poland.
Since the beginning of the year, Polish border guards have intercepted airborne cigarette smuggling worth around 1 million euros. Nineteen people involved in the illegal transport operations have been detained.
