Head of the United Transitional Cabinet Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya welcomed the resolution on Belarus adopted by the European Parliament.
“I welcome the strong resolution of the European Parliament condemning the Belarus regime’s hybrid attacks against Europe, expressing solidarity with Lithuania, calling for targeted sanctions, and stressing the need to counter disinformation and pursue full international accountability,” the leader of the democratic forces wrote on X.
As a reminder, on December 18 the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Belarus. Members of the European Parliament condemned Belarus for coordinated hybrid attacks against Lithuania and also criticized the United States for its decision to partially lift sanctions on Belarus, which was not coordinated with the European Union.
The resolution points to incursions of weather balloons into Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, as well as cyberattacks, state-backed disinformation campaigns, economic pressure, and the use of migration as a tool of influence.
The resolution condemns the detention by the Belarusian authorities of EU freight carriers following Lithuania’s closure of the border.
Members of the European Parliament expressed solidarity with Lithuania and supported its right to take proportionate defensive measures.
The European Parliament also criticized the uncoordinated U.S. decision to partially lift sanctions on Belarus and reaffirmed the EU’s position of non-recognition of the legitimacy of Lukashenka.
