Today in Rome, the head of the United Transitional Cabinet, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, met with members of the group “For Democratic Belarus.” During the meeting, she thanked Italian parliamentarians for their solidarity and support for Belarus — both in international organisations and in receiving Belarusian refugees, former political prisoners, and volunteers who fought for Ukraine.
The democratic leader stressed that the situation in Belarus remains extremely difficult: daily arrests, deaths in prison, and repression against anyone expressing support for Ukraine.
During the meeting, she presented several practical initiatives:
• to initiate a resolution in the Italian Parliament on the situation in Belarus, political prisoners, and geopolitical risks;
• to organise in 2026 a large congress of symbolic “godparents” of Belarusian political prisoners, with the participation of former prisoners and their families;
• to open internship programmes for Belarusian youth in the Parliament and offices of Italian deputies;
• to support active participation of Belarusian parliamentary groups in the International Parliamentarians’ Alliance and take part in the next forum in London;
• to use key Belarusian events for public information and support campaigns;
• to organise regular meetings with the Belarusian diaspora in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Milan, and other cities.
“Thank you for this productive meeting. I am very glad to see how the Belarusian topic brings together all groups and parties. Your support and attention to Belarus help us move forward,” the Belarusian politician said after the meeting.
“We must prepare for a new window of opportunity,” she added.
