Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya received the prestigious Margaret Thatcher Award in Rome. The award is presented annually for outstanding leadership and commitment to the principles of freedom.
During her speech, the leader of the democratic forces noted that the Belarusian protests of 2020 are often described as a “revolution with a woman’s face,” and she dedicated the award to all Belarusian women who continue to fight for freedom.
“Margaret Thatcher said that courage is the most important virtue. Today I dedicate this award to the courageous Belarusian women who are fighting for freedom. Who do not follow the crowd, but pave the way. To women like Maria Kalesnikava, who tore up her Belarusian passport and threw it out of a car window so she would not be deported from the country.
To women like Katsyaryna Andreeva, who continued livestreaming from a rally while Lukashenka’s OMON was arresting her. To women like Nina Bahinskaya, an elderly woman who protested again and again on the streets despite repeated arrests and sentences. Our own Iron Ladies. Many of these women remain behind bars. And we will not stop fighting for their release. Just as we will not stop fighting for our country.”
