A ceremony to award medals of the United Transitional Cabinet to prominent figures of Belarusian civil society and culture took place at the Museum of Free Belarus in Warsaw.

“Every year on March 25, we honor outstanding Belarusians who, through their actions and courage, strengthen our country. Sometimes quietly, unnoticed, sometimes at personal risk,” said head of the United Transitional Cabinet Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

The Francysk Skaryna Medal was awarded to scholar and общественно-политический деятель, chancellor of the Belarusian Free University Aliaksandr Milinkevich, the only democratic candidate in the 2006 presidential election. The award was received by his wife Inna Kulei, as Milinkevich recently underwent a serious operation.

The medal “For Productive Work for the Benefit of Belarus” was awarded to the creator of the Nexta Telegram channel Stsiapan Putsila. Among the other recipients were writer Sviatlana Kurs (Eva Viežnaviec), actress Kryscina Drobysh, and actor Ihar Sigau (the award was received by his wife Valeryia).

Tsikhanouskaya also separately noted a posthumous award for journalist and blogger Mikita Melkaziorau.

“His unexpected and unjust passing shocked us all. But it is inspiring how much he managed to accomplish as a journalist and promoter of Belarusian culture,” she said.

The ceremony concluded with words from writer Sviatlana Kurs: “Belarus will soon become free and happy.”
