Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was awarded the Menschen in Europa prize “Brave Women for Freedom and Democracy” on 27 November during her visit to Germany, her office reported.
The ceremony traditionally took place in the German city of Passau as part of the annual Menschen in Europa program, which honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the protection of human rights and democratic values. Alongside Tsikhanouskaya, the award was presented to Yulia Navalnaya.
In her speech, Tsikhanouskaya dedicated the award to all Belarusians and emphasized that it is the people who define Belarus and its future:
“It is the people who define Belarus and its future, not Lukashenka’s criminal regime. People who fight desperately every day to make Belarus free, independent, and European. And today I dedicate this award to my compatriots,” the democratic leader said.
Before the award ceremony, a panel discussion took place, during which Tsikhanouskaya answered questions about the situation in Ukraine, her personal experiences, the work and strategy of the democratic forces, and the role of Europe.
