Work to deal with the aftermath of severe weather is continuing in Vitsyebsk. Additional Emergency Ministry crews from the Liozna, Bieshankovichy and Vitsyebsk districts have been deployed.
The July 13 storm mainly affected the city centre.
“Kirava Street, Pryvakzalnaya Square, Peramozhtsau Park, Bahdana Khmialnitskaha Street and areas near the Vitsba River were affected. More than 120 trees were knocked down by the wind, and their exact number is now being counted. From 9 p.m. and throughout the night, 29 crews worked to clear debris, including municipal services, Zelenstroy, heating network and energy workers, as well as volunteers. At around 11 p.m., crews from Haradok arrived to help us.
About 120 people and 35 pieces of equipment were involved. Nearly 100 trees were cut up and removed overnight, and some of them were taken away. Work to deal with the aftermath is continuing. Additional crews from the Liozna, Bieshankovichy and Vitsyebsk districts have now arrived and started work”, Vitsyebsk City Executive Committee deputy chairman Pavel Shykshnian said.
According to the Emergency Ministry, wind gusts reached 15–20 metres per second. Rescuers were called out 47 times to remove fallen trees. Six vehicles were damaged by fallen trees. Trees also damaged power lines, affecting about 40 sections of the electricity network. Restoration work is under way on 10 sections.
The cleanup is expected to be completed by the end of the day.
