Belarus’ State Border Committee issued a press release following today’s working meeting between the deputy chief border commissioners of Belarus and Lithuania at the Lavoriškės checkpoint.
The sides discussed the “current situation on the Belarus–Lithuania border section and a range of pressing issues related to smuggling and illegal migration,” the Committee said.
The representative of the State Border Committee stated that the agency’s work is aimed at “maintaining comfortable border-crossing conditions for law-abiding citizens, and developing transit potential as well as economic and cultural ties with all neighbouring countries, including the Republic of Lithuania.”
“Attention was drawn to the fact that the Republic of Lithuania unilaterally ceased its participation in several international cooperation agreements in the border sphere. Nevertheless, the State Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus confirmed its readiness for joint work should a full-fledged and constructive dialogue be resumed.
A border must be a place where civilized cooperation occurs in the spirit of partnership and equality,” the Committee said following the meeting.
Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service reported that it presented Lithuania’s position on smuggling carried out using meteorological balloons and drones, urging Belarus to take active measures to stop smuggling. The issue of returning Lithuanian trucks was also discussed.
