Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova used her programme on Sputnik Radio to reflect at length on the chaotic nature of the information agenda and the role of mass communication in people’s lives. As an example, she cited statements and actions by French President Emmanuel Macron. According to Zakharova, Macron is “for some reason” trying to establish cooperation with Russia through Aliaksandr Lukashenka.
“This is precisely the dichotomy: we do not know at what moment which person will hear which part of Macron’s statements. Some will hear about cooperation, the call for which was, for some reason, addressed to the president of Belarus, even though it concerns Russia. Others will hear about the supposed normality of seizing tankers that are lawfully navigating the world’s oceans, sailing under flags, according to schedules, and with documents issued in compliance with international maritime law and the laws of coastal states, where coastal states are concerned. And for some, this person will become the embodiment of reasonableness, while for others, this person will become the embodiment of irrationality,” Zakharova said.
On May 31, France intercepted another tanker from Russia’s shadow fleet. The vessel was travelling from Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the interception on June 1.
Zakharova was also referring to the telephone conversation between Macron and Lukashenka, which took place on May 24.
