The Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology said there was no shortage of donor blood or its components. The Minsk City Executive Committee’s Health Committee reported this. Reports of a possible blood shortage were prompted by information circulating on social media.
The center explained that the reports resulted from an incorrect explanation by a medical worker.
“The situation with donor blood is stable and under control. The center has a non-reducible reserve of the necessary blood components. The information that spread on social media is not true.
The reason is that the information was not presented correctly: one of the nurses did not explain to the patient’s relatives the contents of the leaflet about the possibility of donating blood, which led the family members to misunderstand it,” the comment said.
The center stressed that such leaflets are given to patients’ relatives as instructions for those who wish to become donors. As Volha Liavandouskaya, head of the center’s transfusion department, said, there is no urgent call for blood donations at present.
