Hrodna customs officers and employees of Beltamozhservice discovered an unusual passenger while transloading passenger cars delivered in a sea container from the United States. A raccoon was found on the dashboard of one of the vehicles.
It is assumed that the animal could have climbed into the container at the loading stage and then crossed the Atlantic together with the cars. It was discovered at the Kamenny Loh TLC customs clearance facility. Specialized experts were promptly called to the scene. Until their arrival, customs officers and company employees ensured the animal was provided with the necessary conditions.
At present, the raccoon has been sent for quarantine to the Oshmyany District Veterinary Station, where specialists are monitoring its condition.
After the quarantine measures are completed, a decision will be made on the animal’s future. Options under consideration include transferring the raccoon to Nalibokskaya Pushcha or to the Hrodna Zoo, depending on veterinary conclusions and the animal’s condition.
“We will be following the fate of the American passenger,” the State Customs Committee said.
