The Vitebsk city prosecutor has initiated a criminal case against a 39-year-old man. The case is being investigated under Part 2 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code (exposure to danger).
The case was prompted by the condition of the man’s mother, a 61-year-old woman with a Group III disability. According to case materials, after being discharged from the hospital, she was unable to move or care for herself.
“Instead of helping his 39-year-old son, she was effectively abandoned and left starving. For nine months, the man repeatedly failed to provide the necessary assistance, spending most of his mother’s pension on food for himself and alcohol. He fed the pensioner once every two or three days, giving her a meager diet of pasta and porridge cooked in water, which led to extreme exhaustion (cachexia) and anemia.
Despite his mother’s need for medical rehabilitation after a leg injury to restore mobility, he ignored her requests to buy crutches, resulting in improper bone healing in her right shin and the near-total loss of mobility,” prosecutors said.
Eventually, the woman turned to the police for help but refused to file a formal complaint against her son. The decision to open a criminal case was made by the prosecutor’s office.
It was noted that the man abuses alcohol, has been sent twice to a compulsory treatment facility, and has multiple prior administrative and criminal offenses.
