Poland Hands Over Uladzislau Nadzieika, Detained On Espionage Charges, To Belarus

The name of another participant in today’s exchange between Belarus and Poland has become known. Poland handed over to Belarus Uladzislau Nadzieika, detained in September 2025.

Belarusian state TV channel STV named four individuals transferred to Belarus. The name of the fifth has not been disclosed.

“At present, only some of the participants in the exchange have been named. Thus, Belarusian intelligence officers Alyaksandr Balan and Uladzislau Nadzieika have been returned from Polish territory, as well as two citizens of the Russian Federation — archaeologist Aleksandr Butyagin and Nina Popova,” the channel reported.

Uladzislau Nadzieika was detained by Poland’s Internal Security Agency in September 2025. He was accused of participating in the activities of a foreign intelligence service against Poland. It is known that Nadzieika was a member of the Białystok хоругва of “Paspalitaye Rushenne” and worked as a taxi driver.

According to Polish media reports, at the time of his arrest Nadzieika was found with a list of names of Belarusians who had been granted asylum in Poland. He was supposed to monitor them on instructions from Belarusian intelligence services.

Belarus handed over to Poland political prisoner Andrzej Poczobut (Andrei Pachobut), as well as monk Grzegorz Gaweł and Tomasz Beroza. Gaweł was detained in 2025 and accused of espionage. Beroza was sentenced in 2023 to 14 years in prison on espionage charges.

As Deputy Head of the KGB Investigative Department Aliaksandr Tarasevich said, negotiations on the exchange lasted about a year, and talks with the leaders of the interested countries were conducted personally by Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

“At the initial stage, the discussion concerned exclusively the interests of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Poland. But, as we all know, everything in the world is interconnected. Ultimately, the intelligence services of seven states were involved in this process. Contacts were maintained through established, permanent channels of communication with Polish intelligence services, as well as with the services of other states practically around the world. The State Security Committee actively cooperated with allies in the CSTO and other friendly countries,” Tarasevich said.

Participants in the exchange who arrived in Belarus were presented with gifts from Lukashenka and were also promised highly qualified medical assistance and “conditions for resolving their personal and family issues.”

The KGB representative noted that Belarus advocates resolving conflicts in the region by peaceful means.

“Today’s example clearly shows that the principle declared by the President of the Republic of Belarus — resolving all issues by peaceful, diplomatic means, through the search for compromises — always leads to a positive result that ultimately benefits everyone. We believe that this principle should and can be used to resolve all acute issues and conflict situations in the region. The Republic of Belarus has such a will,” Tarasevich said.
