“Participation And Mercy” — Propagandists Air Report On Release Of Natallia Levaya

State media aired a report about Natallia Levaya, a political prisoner pardoned today by Aliaksandr Lukashenka. In the segment titled “A Chance For The Future,” Deputy Interior Minister Hennadz Kazakevich meets with Natallia’s mother and husband, who traveled from Brest to a penal colony in Homel Region.

The authors claim they arrived “for a conversation, to vouch for their wife and daughter.” Later, Natallia herself, wearing a robe with a yellow tag, is brought into the hall. She was sentenced in 2024 to six years in prison.

Kazakevich asks her on camera about her attitude toward the “unlawful actions committed in the past.”

“Yes, you have been convicted, you are serving your sentence, and so on. But has your attitude toward what you did changed? We are referring to aiding extremism, financing extremism, and so forth. In the event that your petition is positively considered, do you intend to continue engaging in unlawful activities?” he asks.

“I want to focus on my family,” she replies.

The Interior Ministry representative then states that the release was motivated not by “political considerations,” but by “participation” and “mercy.”

Natallia signs the “pardon” petition in the same hall.

“Addressing the president, she wrote that she repents, asked you for leniency, described her plans for life and plans to raise her son in Belarus. Natallia indicated that she is ready to lead a law-abiding life. The petition, with the necessary package of documents, was immediately forwarded to the head of state,” the propagandists say.

Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Volha Chupris says in the report that the pardon was “granted on condition of law-abiding conduct.”

“Despite the fact that the crime committed by the convicted person falls into the category of serious offenses, and that she has served less than half of her sentence, the head of state made a positive decision. At the same time, the pardon was granted on condition of law-abiding conduct. This means that if the norms of criminal law are violated, the person returns to places of deprivation of liberty,” she says, noting that over the previous year Lukashenka, on the basis of submitted proposals, pardoned 352 people.

“However, the head of state may also make individual decisions in exceptional cases, taking into account special life circumstances, health conditions, and guided by the principle of humanism. In fact, such a decision was made today by the head of state when he signed the decree,” the official states.

In July 2024, the Brest Regional Court sentenced Natallia to six years in a general-regime penal colony and a fine of 40,000 rubles. She was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 361-1 (financing extremist activity), Part 2 of Article 361-3 (financing participation in military actions on the territory of a foreign state), and Article 361-2 (financing the activities of an extremist formation; the article was repealed in 2021).

In April 2025, ONT aired a propaganda report about detentions over donations, including Natallia.

In January 2026, it became known that Natallia became pregnant in the colony after a visit with her husband. The birth is expected in March.
