Third-quarter reports from North American companies Nutrien and Mosaic point to stabilisation in the potash market. Prices did not increase compared with the same period last year and even declined in some segments.

In the third quarter of this year, Nutrien sold potash fertiliser at an average price of $310 per tonne in North America and $253 per tonne in other markets. Compared with the same period last year, the price fell by $9 in the North American market and increased by $3 in other markets. The company’s average selling price across all markets was $275 per tonne, down $2 from a year earlier.

At the same time, the average price for the first nine months remains higher than last year, at $269 compared with $250 per tonne.

Mosaic’s average selling price for potash fertiliser was $276 per tonne in the third quarter, up $1 from the second quarter of this year and $5 from the third quarter of last year.

In both cases, the figures refer to fertiliser selling prices at the company’s facility, excluding delivery costs.

Nutrien’s report also includes a market volume forecast for 2027. The company expects global potash fertiliser shipments to total 74-77 million tonnes this year and increase to 75-79 million tonnes next year. It also notes that potash fertiliser remains affordable for consumers and that demand is strong in major importing regions.

In the first nine months, the company sold 11.5 million tonnes of potash fertiliser, of which nearly 3.8 million tonnes were sold in North America and 7.7 million tonnes in other markets. Overall sales volumes increased by 0.7%. They fell by 3% in the North American market but rose by 2.6% in other markets.

The company’s revenue from potash fertiliser sales increased by 8.5% in the first nine months to $3.1 billion.

The company’s production volume amounted to just under 11 million tonnes, an increase of 530,000 tonnes compared with the previous year.

In the third quarter, Mosaic sold 2.1 million tonnes of potash fertiliser, 200,000 tonnes less than a year earlier. Its revenue from potash sales fell by 7.5% to $643 million.

The company expects potash fertiliser production to reach 8.6 million tonnes this year. Mosaic continues to target annual production of 9 million tonnes.
