At around midday today, a NATO fighter jet patrolling the airspace of the Baltic states shot down a drone over Estonia, according to ERR.
The incident took place over Lake Võrtsjärv, a large lake located in southern Estonia.
As Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur said, information about the drone was received from the Latvian military. Estonian military radars also detected the drone moving towards southern Estonia.
“We activated the necessary measures, and a fighter jet from NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission shot down this drone.
We are now establishing all the exact details, but it is known that the drone was shot down over Lake Võrtsjärv. As far as we know, the location of the wreckage is also being determined, and it may be on land rather than in the lake itself,” ERR quoted the minister as saying.
There have been no reports of damage so far.
Estonian military authorities issued an air threat alert for southern Estonia earlier today. The alert was lifted at around 12:45 p.m.
ERR also noted that northwestern Russia came under renewed drone attacks today, as indicated by the closure of airports in Pskov and St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo. Governor of Leningrad Region Aleksandr Drozdenko reported that two drones had been shot down.
