The National Bank of Belarus plans to expand the use of the interbank identification system for user authentication across various services. This was stated in an interview with Bankovski Vestnik by Chairman of the National Bank Raman Halouchanka.
“Biometrics is the most promising method of identification, offering a more reliable and convenient alternative to traditional passwords and PIN codes. Banks are already actively using biometrics to authenticate clients in online lending. As part of the further development of the interbank identification system, a set of measures is planned to increase its attractiveness. The main focus will be on promoting it as a reliable tool for remote identification, authentication, and verification of data of individuals and legal entities. It is also planned to begin large-scale work on promoting its use not only for initial identification but also as a universal service for authenticating existing clients in various applications,” he said.
The National Bank is also considering creating a biometric data bank based on the system for use beyond the financial sector.
“Special attention will be paid to introducing authentication methods that combine ease of use with a high level of security and resistance to digital fraud. A promising direction is the expansion of biometric authentication in the financial sector, including for payments. The possibility of creating a centralized biometric data bank based on the interbank identification system for use outside the financial sector will also be considered. In the near future, mechanisms for biometric identification of individuals without biometric documents and the possibility of remote updating of data in the system are to be developed,” he added.
