Minsk Authorities Plan to Restrict Truck Traffic on Minsk Ring Road

The Minsk City Executive Committee is planning changes to traffic management on the Minsk Ring Road (MKAD). A meeting of the commission on road safety was held by the committee.

“A major problem on the MKAD remains the presence of slow-moving and low-acceleration vehicles, as well as trucks, within the traffic flow. This leads to an increase in conflicts and serious traffic accidents due to significant differences in vehicle speeds and the number of overtaking manoeuvres. The meeting reviewed measures related to monitoring and restricting truck traffic in certain lanes of the MKAD (specifically the second lane). An experiment will be conducted over a period of 12 months to assess the impact of such restrictions,” the Minsk City Executive Committee said.

The meeting also reviewed progress in implementing road safety measures near educational institutions and across the city’s road network. A total of 271 such measures are planned for this year. They include the installation of speed bumps, physical road narrowings, improvements to uncontrolled pedestrian crossings, the creation of pick-up and drop-off zones for young passengers near schools, upgrades to street lighting and other measures.
