Belarus’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it has not yet received any information about Belarusian citizens being among those killed or injured in the train crash in Spain.

“We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died. We sincerely wish all those injured a speedy recovery,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry noted that the Belarusian Embassy in Spain remains in constant contact with local authorities and continues to monitor the situation.

According to the latest figures provided by the regional authorities of Castile-La Mancha, 30 people have died in the crash. These figures are not final.

The tragedy occurred this morning. Two high-speed trains travelling from Madrid to Seville collided. According to preliminary information, one train stopped on the tracks, after which a second train crashed into it. Several carriages derailed in the collision, and two fell down an embankment.

A total of 544 people were travelling on the two trains.

Investigators are preliminarily considering driver error and a malfunction in the signalling system, which should have warned the second train that the tracks were occupied.
