Relatives of some political prisoners were called by correctional colonies on the evening of September 15 and told that their loved ones would be released in the morning, but this did not happen, Mayday.Team reports.
According to human rights defenders, relatives were asked to arrive at the places where the prisoners were serving their sentences on the morning of September 16 so that they could meet their loved ones, who were expected to be released as part of an agreement between U.S. President’s Special Envoy John Coale and Aliaksandr Lukashenka.
The political prisoners did not leave the colonies in the morning. The circumstances were not explained to their relatives. Human rights defenders are aware of several similar cases.
It is noted that these were not the 25 political prisoners who were taken from Belarus to Lithuania on September 16 following the agreement between Coale and Lukashenka.
The United States will lift sanctions on Bellesbumprom and Lakokraska in exchange. Coale also said that the release of political prisoners and the lifting of sanctions will continue.
