Aliaksandr Lukashenka, after the ceremony at which ambassadors from nine countries presented their credentials, received Valiantsin Rybakou, Belarus’s permanent representative to the United Nations, for a briefing. The main topic of their discussion was relations with the United States. In the absence of an ambassador, Rybakou is one of Belarus’s negotiators with the U.S. side.
“The United Nations is a powerful organization, and, of course, we have interests there. But I will not hide the fact that what interests me more at the moment is Belarusian-American relations.”, Lukashenka told Rybakou.
“You have been entrusted with both the honor and the enormous task of improving relations between the United States and Belarus. You are working in close contact with John Coale. Please convey my best wishes to him and to his charming wife.”, he added.
Lukashenka stressed that he carefully reads every document submitted to him and tries to read between the lines, but even with that approach he sees good prospects for relations with the United States.
“I read every document you send me word for word, down to every comma. I have formed certain impressions and opinions regarding the United States and its intentions. I know how to read between the lines, and it is not about the wording but about the spirit of how the leadership of the United States thinks. So even if John tries to embellish something, there is no need to do that. I am an experienced person and know how things really are. Nevertheless, the current state of our relations, especially their momentum and prospects, is good.”, he said.
During the briefing, Lukashenka again stressed that his talks with the United States are not separate from Belarus’s relations with Russia and China.
“I explained our relations first and foremost with our Russia, with the PRC, and also with Iran. We discussed many issues. We have never hedged or hidden our position behind diplomatic language. That is why we are benefiting today. They understand perfectly well, including Mr. Coale, what we can do and what we cannot. We will continue to follow this course. A course of decency, openness and our clear position.”, he said.
John Coale last visited Belarus in late April. Reports subsequently emerged about possible visits in May and June. Trump’s special envoy himself announced that he would soon travel to Minsk, though without specifying any dates. However, the visit has yet to take place.
