Alyaksandr Lukashenka believes that even if the Russia–Ukraine war ends soon, pressure on Belarus will not diminish. He voiced this prediction at today’s meeting of the Security Council, according to his press service.
“You see what forces are trying to torpedo even the American proposals for a peace agreement with Ukraine. I mean that even if peace is achieved today or tomorrow in Ukraine, things will not get easier for us. They will continue to suffocate us. Especially those states… I won’t insult them so as not to offend the nations to our north or north-west,” Lukashenka said.
He claimed that neighbouring Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine are making demands of him, repeating a long-standing propaganda narrative about alleged armed formations abroad that seek to overthrow his rule.
“They demand something from us. And what if we in Belarus created alternative governments and supported ‘fighters for independence’? They are forming combat units there, they are arming them. Remember the banners — the ‘horuhvy’. They didn’t disappear. And whole regiments, as they call them. Is that a joke? And they still make claims against us. Well, they can fund them if they have the money. But if this is directed against our country, how are we supposed to respond?” he stated.
At the same time, Lukashenka welcomed negotiations aimed at ending the Russia–Ukraine war and praised U.S. President Donald Trump.
“No matter how some try to belittle Trump’s role, he is doing well in this regard. His statements yesterday will not pass unnoticed. He wants to stop the war, as he says, so that people don’t die. You can spin this however you want, but what can you say against what the Americans are doing today?” Lukashenka said.
