Lukashenka Says He Supports Lula da Silva in Brazil’s Presidential Election

Alyaksandr Lukashenka met today with Brazil’s ambassador to Minsk, Bernard Klingl. During the meeting, he proposed expanding cooperation between the two countries and expressed support for Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the upcoming elections.

“Brazil is going through an important political moment. As far as I am informed, this year you will be holding general elections. You will be electing everyone you possibly can. Frankly speaking, I do not envy you, because this is a difficult period. But we are very concerned that the current president of Brazil should retain his position in these elections. As far as I am informed, he has confirmed his participation in these elections.

We will in every possible way contribute to this, if it is needed for Brazil, so that the elections take place in a calm and peaceful environment in the interests of the Brazilian people. If this is needed,” Lukashenka said, according to his press service.

He proposed building relations more intensively and not complicating them.

“I think we need to approach the building of our relations more intensively and not complicate them. Simply. The foundation is the economy. Therefore, we need to choose those areas of economic cooperation that are of interest to Brazil. On the other hand, that are of interest to Belarus. This we can do,” he added.

According to Lukashenka, there are many mutually beneficial issues that he has already raised in relations with Brazil.

“But some of them have not found their resolution. And since they are mutually beneficial (as you can see, times are changing very quickly), we need to approach these issues seriously and decide whether we will move in this direction,” he said.

He also stressed that the views of specialists in both Belarus and Brazil on issues of the world order fully coincide.

It should be noted that previously Brazil was one of the largest buyers of Belarusian potash fertilizers.
