Aliaksandr Lukashenka said he is deeply concerned about Russia’s Moscow region. He made the remarks during a meeting with Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the region surrounding the Russian capital, who arrived in Belarus for the Belarus-Russia Forum of Regions.
According to Lukashenka, Moscow region is Belarus’ largest trading partner among Russia’s regions.
“It is a pleasure to see you in Belarus. This is not only about our good brotherly relations, but also about the foundation of everything — the economy. Moscow region is our leading partner, ranking first. Trade turnover stands at more than $15 billion. I hadn’t really paid much attention to that. But when I looked at it more closely, I thought: if Moscow region alone accounts for $15 billion, then the rest is all of Russia. That leaves relatively little for the rest of such a huge country,” he said.
Belarus and Russia’s total bilateral trade amounted to $62 billion last year.
“We value this greatly, Aliaksandr Ryhoravich,” Vorobyov replied.
“So do I. But I know things are not easy for you. And $15 billion in trade turnover is nothing compared with the gross product your region contributes to Russia,” Lukashenka continued.
“If there is anything we can do, just tell us. We will certainly work together and do everything we can. I am very concerned about your region. Whenever I meet with President Putin, we spend a lot of time talking about Moscow region. Now that I know you better and in greater detail, I have even greater respect for the work you and your colleagues are doing to develop the Moscow region,” he added.
