Aliaksandr Lukashenka wants peace talks between Russia and Ukraine to take place in Belarus without mediators. He made the statement at the Minsk Conference on Eurasian Security.

“We are ready to continue making a real contribution to resolving the conflict and minimising its consequences. There is no alternative to a peaceful solution. If you want to reach an agreement (I am addressing those who want to reach an agreement), please come. Come to Minsk. Here, at Romashka, where we are gathered, at the President Hotel — anywhere, at the Palace of the Republic, at the Palace of Independence, just across the road — I will make everything available. Come, as you did in the past, and we will negotiate,” he said.

As a reminder, in 2014–2015, negotiations between Ukraine and Russia over Donbas took place in Minsk with the participation of European leaders. Lukashenka did not take part in the process at the time but provided the venue.

“We will negotiate. Not ‘you negotiate’, but ‘we will negotiate’. Because we are involved in this Ukrainian conflict, and our interests in these peace talks are very significant. Come, and we will talk. Without any mediation. I do not want to play the role of mediator.

I have had enough of this mediation. For 30 years as president, I have been persecuted, cars have been overturned, and attempts have been made to overthrow me. Some were trying to overthrow me, while others were offering themselves as mediators. So I do not want to play the role of mediator, especially since we have substantial, serious interests in these negotiations. Particularly given the prospect of having to rebuild Ukraine. The West will not rebuild Ukraine. Ukrainians must understand that we, the Russians and the Ukrainians, will have to rebuild Ukraine and do everything possible to ensure that our peoples can put this behind them,” he said.
