Lukashenka and Tokayev Hold Phone Call, No Official Mention of Spy Exchange

Aliaksandr Lukashenka and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed the development of Belarusian-Kazakh relations on Friday, “noting the high dynamics of contacts at various levels,” the Belarusian politician’s press service reported.

The press service noted that “over the past six months alone, a number of significant bilateral visits have taken place. Kazakhstan was visited by the Prime Minister and the Belarusian foreign minister, while Minsk hosted the Chair of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.”

Aliaksandr Lukashenka and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also discussed the schedule of upcoming events and visits. At the end of May, Astana will host the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and the Eurasian Economic Forum. Lukashenka and Tokayev reviewed the list of issues that will form the agenda of these international forums.

“Ahead of the shared great holiday — Victory Day — the leaders exchanged greetings, wishing the peoples of Belarus and Kazakhstan peace and prosperity,” Lukashenka’s press service also said.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka “renewed his invitation to his Kazakh counterpart to pay an official visit to Belarus in order to comprehensively discuss all current issues on the bilateral agenda and identify promising projects and plans for the future.”

In the autumn of this year, a Kazakh delegation headed by the prime minister is also expected to visit Minsk to take part in the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and the Innoprom international exhibition.

It was reported earlier that a 5-for-5 exchange of detainees took place on the Belarusian-Polish border on Thursday, resulting in the release of, among others, Andrzej Poczobut. The operation involved the special services of Poland, Belarus, Romania, Moldova and Russia. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that the United States and Kazakhstan were also involved in the exchange.

Gazeta Wyborcza reported that monk Grzegorz Gawel was exchanged on Thursday for an officer of Kazakhstan’s military intelligence who had been working in Kyiv under the cover of a diplomat and military attaché. He was arrested in Poland last year in connection with espionage activities.
