Lithuanian Seimas Committee Approves Proposal to Restrict Property Purchases for Belarusians

The Lithuanian Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs has approved a proposal to обратиться to the government with a request to prepare amendments restricting the right of Russians and Belarusians to purchase real estate in the country, LRT reported, citing BNS.

The Cabinet of Ministers has been asked to prepare draft laws by October 1 that would introduce restrictions on property purchases for Belarusians, as well as a ban for citizens of both countries on acquiring property near strategically important sites in Lithuania. Earlier, conservatives proposed allowing Belarusians and Russians to buy real estate only if they hold a permanent residence permit in the country.

At present, the existing law prohibits only Russians without a residence permit in Lithuania from purchasing real estate. There are currently no similar restrictions for Belarusians.

Meanwhile, last week the Seimas approved the extension of national sanctions against citizens of Russia and Belarus until 2028. The final vote is expected to take place on Thursday.

According to the government’s proposal, the existing restrictive measures will remain in force, and the only new provision will be a ban on importing more than 200 litres of fuel into Lithuania in vehicles from these countries.

The law on restrictive measures has been in force in Lithuania since 2023.
