Lithuanian Officers Intercept 11 Weather Balloons With Contraband Cigarettes During a Week of Borderland Raids

Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service has summed up a week of anti-smuggling raids in border regions. The operations, carried out since 24 November, involve border guards, customs officers and police, including military police.

A total of 11 weather balloons and 21,430 contraband cigarettes were seized over the week. During this period, officers inspected nearly 3,200 vehicles and almost 4,000 people. Forty-five reports were issued.

It should be noted that Vilnius Airport again ceased operations from Sunday evening until early Monday morning. Restrictions were imposed because of balloons that posed a threat to aircraft.
