Lithuanian Border Guards Retrieve Two Cigarette Rafts From the Neman

Lithuanian border guards from Druskininkai retrieved two cigarette rafts from the Neman River. Smugglers attempted to transport 2,800 packs of cigarettes worth 14,500 euros across the border.

The rafts were disguised as ice floes. They were spotted through video surveillance systems. The objects appeared suspicious to the border guards because of their unusually regular shape. Using a patrol boat, officers intercepted both rafts. Inside were NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.

An investigation is underway.
