Lithuanian Border Guards Refuse Entry To 34 Migrants

Lithuanian border guards detained and turned back 34 migrants on Monday after they attempted to cross the border from Belarus.

This was the highest daily figure recorded this year. None of those detained had identity documents. They identified themselves as citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Eritrea, Pakistan and Somalia. Two women were among those detained.

Most of the migrants were stopped in the Varėna district in the Čepkeliai nature reserve. There is no border fence in the swampy area there. Lithuanian authorities rely only on sensors and video surveillance systems.

According to the Lithuanian Border Guard Service, since the beginning of the year 251 attempted illegal border crossings have been prevented in Latvia, 169 in Lithuania and 132 in Poland.
