Lithuanian border guards intercepted a shipment of smuggled Belarusian cigarettes on Sunday. A Volkswagen Passat was stopped on the Varėna-Grodno road near Druskininkai.
The driver initially refused to comply with the demands of police and border guard officers. He attempted to flee. Police later found the abandoned Passat. It contained 6,000 packs of NZ Gold and Minsk 5 Superslims cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps. The shipment was valued at 33,000 euros.
Three Druskininkai residents suspected of smuggling were subsequently detained.
An investigation has been launched.
