Lithuanian border guards prevented an attempt by 18 migrants to enter Lithuania from Belarus. The foreigners used a tunnel dug under the border fence. Judging by photos and video, the exit from the tunnel was located on the Lithuanian side beyond the control track strip.
The migrants emerging from the tunnel were spotted using video surveillance equipment. Patrols equipped with thermal imagers and supported by dog handlers were dispatched to detain them.
Seventeen of those detained identified themselves as citizens of Afghanistan, although only three had documents. Another person claimed to be a citizen of Sri Lanka and had no documents. Lithuanian authorities decided to expel all the foreigners to Belarus.
Lithuanian border guards also stopped an Audi A6 with Lithuanian license plates carrying two Ukrainian citizens. According to the border service, they had arrived to pick up the migrants. The Ukrainians were detained, and a pre-trial investigation has been launched.
This is already the second case of a tunnel being discovered. The previous attempt by foreigners to cross the border using a tunnel took place on April 6 in the Vilnius district. This time, the tunnel was discovered in the Varena district.
