Lithuanian Border Guards Detain 12 Migrants on Border With Belarus

Lithuanian border guards reported the detention of a group of 12 migrants on the border with Belarus.

The group attempted to use an area of the Čepkeliai Nature Reserve, where no border fence is installed due to the marshy terrain.

The migrants were detected by surveillance cameras. Patrols dispatched to the area detained all 12 individuals.

“None of the migrants had documents, and they identified themselves as citizens of Burundi. The arrivals were well prepared for outdoor conditions, carrying sleeping bags, warm clothing and rain gear, as well as large amounts of food, water and other supplies. Most claimed to be students studying in Russia and named Germany and Belgium as the intended destinations of their illegal journey,” the statement said.

The entire group was returned to Belarus.
